Looking for Stories of Parents Affected by Parental Alienation…

If you are in the UK, and have a story to tell – Please get in touch. Most of the documentation on PA is from research, cases that are reported on and anecdotal evidence. ANY attempt to catalogue – in any small way – the damage that has been done to PA sufferers though real-life experiences is excellent.

I wish you well.

In my continuing battle to fight parental alienation and promote social change I have started writing an evidence based article. This currently has the working title of ‘Are UK authorities effectively safeguarding children in their approach to the issue that is parental alienation.’

A recent post of mine (Cafcass Asked Me If I Had Any Ideas. Here Is My 16 Page Response!) will form part of a section on Cafcass. Once I have completed the article in its entirety I aim to use it in various ways to highlight the numerous service gaps that are allowing this form of abuse to go unchallenged.

I am looking for parents that are affected by parental alienation that are prepared to share their stories with me. The selected stories will be included within my article as vignettes. Please be assured that any stories included in the article will be fully anonymised. All that I ask…

Parental Alienation as a False Allegation

karenwoodall's avatarKaren Woodall - Psychotherapist, Writer, Supervisor, Trainer

I have worked in many cases where parental alienation is featured and some where it is alleged but on investigation it is not present. In these cases, in which children actually are withdrawn from a parent, there are distinct features which allow us to determine that it is not parental alienation.  Unfortunately, in the investigation, it becomes apparent that the allegation of parental alienation is being used to either further control behaviours in the parent making it, or that the parent has some problems which are contributing to the child’s withdrawal. The common denominator in all of these cases are the behaviour of the parent from whom the child has withdrawn, which is often fixed and rigid in presentation and which escalates in determination that the other parent is to blame when one attempts to intervene.

Learning how to tell the real case of parental alienation from the alleged one…

‘The Living Dead’, by David Shubert

Incredibly emotional post that really sums up the feelings I and others like me have every.single.day.

I am incredibly proud to be involved with the organisation I Was Erased. This U.S. based group is the brainchild of David Shubert, who is a parent continuing to fight what is now a nine and a half year battle to be reunited with his children.

iWasErased (2)

The organisation’s aim is to provide and share support and resources for alienated and left behind parents. Their website can be found at www.iwaserased.com

David regularly writes what he refers to as ‘reflections’ and posts these online. The following is David’s latest reflection, entitled ‘The Living Dead’. This particular piece brought home to me what it is to be an alienated parent.

David has kindly given me permission to post his reflection on here:

Transparency: What to do about ‘parental alienation’: B (change of residence; parental alienation) March 2017

Excellent analysis of a recent decision to move a child that had been alienated from her father to the father.

To quote:

Certainly, parental alienation is a topic of significant public interest and importance for families and family justice professionals. It provokes strong opinions, including on whether and how the family court system (including Cafcass) ought to do better in identifying and managing parental alienation. International Parental Alienation Day on 25 April 2017 inspired a fair amount of commentary. See this Hansard debate secured by ex-Labour Party MP Simon Danczuk on 17 March for a flavour.

Norwich father urges judges to publish rulings on his decade-long family court battle which has cost him more than £500,000

A Norwich man urges the family court to actually publish the transcripts of his 10-year odyssey in trying to see (more) of his child.

  • In his case six courts in two different areas of the UK were involved
  • a half a million pounds was spent by him
  • every hearing was in private

How on earth can justice be ‘served’ in this case?  There is a huge need for transparency in the family courts to stop situations like this.

Kelly Rutherford – Parental Alienation is why her kids live in France

underwatch's avatarFamily Abduction Watch

We recently learned that actress Kelly Rutherford (Gossip Girl) and her well-know celebrity attorney Wendy Murphy are once again on the media circuit telling the story that Kelly Rutherford was victimized by the U.S. Courts. Could Kelly Rutherford that has to fly to France for custody time with her children be the new celebrity activists for the anti-family court groups?

What is not being reported or acknowledged by Kelly Rutherford or her attorney, even in her Dr. Phil interview below is that she engaged in parental alienation during the custody dispute. We noticed that even when she appeared on the Nancy Grace Show with Nancy’s pal Wendy Murphy, the discussion of “parental alienation” was not a topic that was discussed (when would any topic be off the table with Nancy Grace?)

Here are some reports on her case:

Karen Woodall: Residence Transfer as a Treatment Route For Parental Alienation: Not The Nuclear Option

karenwoodall's avatarKaren Woodall - Psychotherapist, Writer, Supervisor, Trainer

I read this week that a transfer of residence is the ‘nuclear option’ for treatment of parental alienation in the UK .  The discussion arises from a public judgement in which the child concerned was sent to live with her father.  Whilst there is a significant wrangling about the decision, based on the argument that the child had been too damaged already to be helped by a change of residence, (the judge finding that a particularly unattractive argument put forward by the mother), the words at the end of the Judgement are clear, the child will go to live with her father today.

That reality, which could just as easily read, the child will go to live with her mother today, given that fathers alienate mothers too, is one which causes too many people to become uneasy when they contemplate it.  Which is why I guess, it is called by…
